Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Huntsville, Alabama
Madison County's Huntsville -- birthplace of Alabama in 1819 and near the north central region's Tennessee line -- was founded by John Hunt as a trading center that became pivotal to the mid-1800s Tennessee Valley cotton industry. More recently it took on prominence as an astronaut training center and rocket testing ground where visitors can experience simulated weightlessness at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Other attractions include the Huntsville Depot Museum, North Alabama Railroad Museum, and Huntsville Botanical Garden. Harrison Brothers Hardware, one of Alabama's oldest continuously operating stores, is packed with goods from antique biscuit jars to cast iron cookware. No one goes hungry in Huntsville, where restaurants range from southern barbecue joints to Chinese buffets. Huntsville's Twickenham Historic District is lined with homes dating from 1814 when merchants, bankers and attorneys built fashionable brick residences -- many later seized by Union troops during the Civil War. Guided walking tours unfold Saturday mornings from Memorial Day through late July, departing from the Confectionary Shop at Alabama Constitution Village. The Old Town district contains many fine Victorian homes, and charming bungalows dominate the Five Points district. Greater Huntsville area also offers a wealth of outdoor recreation, with the Tennessee River, many large lakes, and mountain trails nearby. Lodging ranges from bed and breakfasts to familiar motel and hotel chains.
